Review : You are looking for a book that gives you almost every aspect of feelings while your reading it (except the ugly crying I must admit) ?!
You are also looking for a book that is a romance but not ONLY a Romance but also a criminal mystery – and maybe a little bit well not quite paranormal but still somehow contemporary ?!
You are confused now?
Thinking this will not work?
It will – believe me HERE is your book
Aftermath by Sandy Goldsworthy
I admit – at first I was confused – than frustrated … but I could not put it down – Its quite long and I read it in two sessions taking almost the complete last weekend. My need to find out what was going to happen won over my frustration about the fact that the storytelling was very detailed.
Yeah I know – usually I am the one complaining that the books I read only scratch the surface of the character development and now you hear me complaining just the opposite. Well truth is – those details totally worked for the story – in fact, they were great – my frustration came from my need to find out what was going on.
Which brings me to the next point. I am totally not used to read more than 50 % of a mystery and still have to guess about who is behind everything – that means – another thing the story had going for it – This book keeps its mystery for a loooooong time.
The writing style is intriguing – when you are looking through Emma’s eyes – you experience a Teenage High school romance novel – with everything going along. The moment it switches to Ben’s view you see a cool almost contemporary feeling but actually being more paranormal novel. And in the moment both viewpoints meet you got a mystery that keeps you guessing until almost the last chapters of the book
Just now while I prepared my review, I noticed there would be more coming – which brings me to my only issue with this book and the reason it is not getting a full 5 stars. The author paid so much attention to everything in this book. There are so many tiny details and explanations to everything that I personally feel one very very important main issue got a little lost on the way.
The Love/Romance
Ben is always very clear about his feelings for Emma and almost as precise and detailed as the complete book is – but up until the last page I could not feel that Emma was on the “same page” – she was confused – that’s clear and intended – but something was missing for me. I cannot put my finger on it.
Maybe my whole issue is that when reading “Aftermath” I thought it was a standalone novel so something was “off”, but given the fact that there is more coming this might be resolved. But it still leaves the fact that the first book made the impression even on the last page that it was a standalone – so if other readers are not paying attention they might share my feelings
I will definitively read the next book. As I can honestly say that it has been a long time since I saw such an intriguing storytelling.
