Title : From a Distant Star
Author : Karen McQuestion
Series : N/A
Rating : 3 Stars
Blurb : Seventeen-year-old Emma was the only one who hadn’t given up on her boyfriend, Lucas. Everyone else—his family, his friends, his doctors—was convinced that any moment could be his last. So when Lucas miraculously returns from the brink of death, Emma thinks her prayers have been answered. As the surprised town rejoices, Emma begins to question whether Lucas is the same boy she’s always known. When she finds an unidentifiable object on his family’s farm—and government agents come to claim it—she begins to suspect that nothing is what it seems. Emma’s out-of-this-world discovery may be the key to setting things right, but only if she and Lucas can evade the agents who are after what they have. With all her hopes and dreams on the line, Emma sets out to save the boy she loves. And with a little help from a distant star, she might just have a chance at making those dreams come true.
Review : It really liked the plot idea of this book. But unfortunatly I was meeting several problems during actually reading it. I am aware what the word “fiction” means but still, the parts of a Book that seem to stay close to reality should feel real too. And I could not work around the fact that Emma felt nowhere near 17 years old in the first chapters. NOT giving up on Lucas and trying really everything, no matter how far fetched is one thing. But she seemed to be living in a fairytale world of an 8 year old that still thinks everything will be good waking up the next morning. Her behavior became better during the story but still the first chapters really felt weird Coming to the parents part … preparation for a child to die is one thing – but here everything felt so exaggerated it almost made me angry and I am not even mentioning the places WHERE his parents discussed that stuff.
If I add this to the part where the agency’s started to look for them and several other weird things going on I am actually tempted to place a label this book saying “scary movie”. As it takes serious elements, adds clichés and wraps everything in a basically nice story. I think the story would have been strong enough to survive with much less of those exaggerations. Because one thing totally came short THE FEELINGS between the leads and weren’t they supposed to be LESS THAN THREE ??? (pun intended)
