Reporter Lara is finding the limits of small-town journalism grating. After all, life in Eagle Ridge is fairly low-key and personal, not exactly the stuff of Pulitzer Prizes.

It doesn’t help that her jerk boss seems determined to make her life a living hell, and he refuses to let her check into strange deliveries being made to a local Atlantean-worshipping cult, the Azilians.

Super-soldier hybrid Magnus and his people are tasting true freedom for the first time. Still on the run from the ruthless Horatius Group, they’ve settled in the Pacific Northwest, hoping for a fresh start, including using the cover of the nearby Azilians.

When Lara’s investigation brings her face-to-face with the stunning Magnus, they find themselves drawn to each other, but both quickly realize something is happening in the woods around the hybrids’ new compound that may threaten not only the hybrids, but everyone in town.

When I stumbled across a book called Nero I thought “Wow, that blurb sounds like it would be totally my thing” – I noticed it was not the first in a series so I went back to check which book would be the first- to find Magnus. I went to read magnus to bin in line … JUST to find out that it actually totally is NOT the first book but that there are like a dozend books before that and this is only a series on the side of another series. Then I found different numbering around the web as where to start and this really got on my nerves. Why does this have to so complicated ?

This book could have been really great but there was far to much of background missing which is probably located in the original series. And with its length it was more a novella than a novel . I really tried to keep an open mind and accept things for what they were having read similar series styles before but this is really a tough nut to crack and I felt like i was missing not bits and pieces but basically the whole concept at times. Me giving still 3.5 stars means that this original concept could be really good. Because if I would only judge based on this one novel it would be a 2 star read because it annoyed me a lot that I went back to the start of a series only to find out it wasn’t really the start.
