Royal Pain by Tracy Wolff

This weeks book of contradictions is Royal Pain (His Royal Hotness #1) by Tracy Wolff. I am a reader always looking for flawed and deep characters and this plot seemed to be a source that would fill my needs.

Imagine my surprise at the first chapter where I actually rechecked if I had the right book in mind. The plot started so superficial that I was wondering if there was any depth to the male lead. And given the fact that the female lead was kind of thrown into the story with an instant lets call it “lightly” attraction.

Ahm well lets say I was starting to worry about how my review would look. And I have to be blunt and honest – I usually have a 3 chapter deal with myself. That means if a book can not capture me within 3 chapters … my review will not end favorable.

What saved the story for me was my need to find out something. So I read on and while I did that the male lead suddenly showed more of his character and received a new layer that I liked. So suddenly after a slow start the story got rolling as also the female lead showed a new side.

On the other hand the string that was actually leading the plot felt a little mysterious or strange? I am not sure what would be the most precise word. I was imagining a ton of things and my mind was spinning because of the fact that the title lets the reader assume there is more to come.

There was also a lot about those secondary characters – like the male leads security detail – that I feel would make great stories.

I was not fully satisfied at the end of this book but as my first impression of it was wrong too … we will have to see what the future brings.

Vanishing Act by A.M. Madden

The first pages of Vanishing Act by A.M. Madden had me guessing if I choose the right book to read because the beginning of the story just feels a little to “Made up”. Everything about the male lead felt kind of fake. YES I KNOW it is a book and that means everything is “Made up”. But I believe the trick is to let the reader imagine that it could actually happen and that feeling was missing for me.

Maybe it was because the story seemed to only scratch the surface of the characters at that point and I was kind of waiting for it to dig deeper.

After a while I kind of started to like the other characters of the story and so somehow the male lead snuck up to me from behind again and there I was suddenly liking the story … because of a PET …
The Blurb really gives away most of the story so the little left I would hate to spoiler.

Therefore I can only say that the story itself is an enjoyable read and I can fully recommend it to anyone who feels that this blurb might be something for him.

Talking about intriguing characters and plotlines …. One of my latest reads comes to mind …

When I read the Blurb I was not sure it sounded like a 50/50 chance of a plot that I would like. I read a book from that author before and liked her writing style so I gave the Plot the benefit of doubt and started reading it.
AND it actually turned out to be more than I would have expected.

The plot does not sound like there could be much depth in the story – so please imagine my surprise at how the author gives the characters their own voice. I do not like to go into the storyline because once I start I know I will spoiler stuff and that is something I always try to avoid.

Lets just say the characters are great and have a lot of depth and their funny / witty dialogues will keep the reader entertained.
The storyline is intriguing enough so the reader will not want to be disturbed while reading …

The Tempest by Brit Constantine

Reading the first pages of The Tempest by Brit Constantine I actually wasn’t sure if this book was for me … it felt like a romantic comedy and I am really not the right person to review those. I need more complexity and love the more complicated characters and plotlines.

Also the story did not really flow that easy and smooth, I would have wished for it to be a little MORE…

From what I heard this is the first book from this author so when I think about it that way – she gets an extra star for that which earns her 4 stars as a result for this novel.

Both characters are equally strong and weak at the same time which makes an interesting mix.

The darkness of their pasts made the story more “my thing” than the comedy, but intriguing enough is the fact that it actually works out to compare those deeper facts with the comedy on the surface.

In total this is a very enjoyable read that I can only recommend – especially for a debut novel …

Wrecked by J.B. Salsbury

WRECKED by J.B. Salsbury was just as I expected it to be…. This author has a wonderful ability to create damaged characters that draw you in. I fell in love with her writing style when I read “Split” – which I also have to recommend strongly to all readers of complicated and off the norm characters. I truly never read such an intriguing character.

About the story I can only say that it does not have to hide behind those intriguing characters, while it might seem clear at the surface from reading the blurb there is a lot more behind it, that I am not going to spoiler here. Thankfully the reader is not kept in the dark for long as both leading characters get to show where they are coming from and the reader is able to follow the plot.

I honestly can not wait what J.B. Salsbury has up her sleeve next as here characters a something to look forward to…
