A killer . . . that’s what I am. It’s what I do. It’s what I live for. I’m no longer the Preston Hale everyone knew. I left that life and the people in it a long time ago the second I made my first kill. I wasn’t going to give in, but when I heard the screams there was no going back. It triggered the pain, the need. I knew what I had to do, and I did it well. But I never expected for Emma Turner – the only link to my past – to come back into my life. She triggers a different emotion inside me, something I hadn’t ever felt. It’s not a want to kill . . . but a need to CLAIM.
Review : I just read Trigger by LP Dover – my first book by this author and here are my thoughts about it
COULD HAVE …received 5 Stars IF
SHOULD HAVE … gotten 5 Stars BUT
WOULD HAVE … made the 5 Stars line BUT
Trigger is actually a great plot. When I started reading the first few pages I became unsure, I thought at first I made a mistake thinking this was a romance novel. Because everything felt like it would become a dark suspense with a hint of romance – Could I read that ?
Was my mind in the right place for it ? … unsure I placed the book aside and read another book.
But after I finished that book I thought – OK – let’s make sure and follow my own 3 chapter rule …I picked it up again and this time I finished it. And it honestly was not what I expected. It started so dark and suspenseful but suddenly it became soft and almost light – which confused me a lot.
The reader is thrown into the facts of Preston’s life – and for a second is left to wonder where this journey is going. No scratch that … there is no wondering – actually the reader is pretty sure where this will end … and it will be violet and deadly.
But then we get a whiplash when we are introduced to Emma and suddenly we get a taste of a plot that could actually turn into a romance Wait what ? yeah you read correctly… we move from violence to romance within 2 chapters – as I said #whiplash much? …
But the author makes it work…
The think I learned from this experience … my 3 chapter rule works … (that rule says every book gets 3 chapters to capture my attention)
The plot is quite interesting if you are open to such ideas. I am not sure about my own opinion on this. Should I hope that this is fiction or believe there is a truth hidden behind it. I feel divided – because I get the need behind it but who is the one to judge and make the listing. #cryptic much – sorry #spoiler alarm
So lets keep the plot idea and go from there… which is what led me to my could have /should have / would have … The beginning of the book is so intense and dark that I expected a certain depth to the rest of the story. But after the romance enters the picture the plot suddenly turned into something so light and almost sunny that I wondered if I had dreamed darkness in the beginning.
Glenn is an interesting character that tries to weave light and darkness together.
His scheming is brilliant until the time he tries to force a reaction out of Preston – the events following this made no real sense to me and if I had been in Preston’s position … well lets say the result would not have been pretty.
Those two things were the main ones stopping me from the 5 stars. But other than this the writing is of this author is really good. The characters are interesting and the developing relationship between them is never anything less then that.
And as I said if you are open to that plot idea it is indeed an interesting subject that makes me want to follow future books as there are some secondary characters here in this plot that will make great leads in future stories.
