Battle Scars

Battle Scars
Jane Harvey-Berrick
October 1st 2017

From the dusty plains of Afghanistan to the sleek corridors of the New York Times, journalist MJ Buckman seeks the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. What she doesn’t expect to find is a man who’s her complete opposite … and fits her perfectly.

Marine Sergeant Jackson Connor knows that relationships don’t work for men in the military. He’s living proof of that. But when a steely-eyed temptress in a flak jacket, who carries her moral cause in front of her, crosses his path, he’s furious, curious, and all kinds of in-lust.
* * *
A grown-up love story about two people who aren’t looking for love, but realize how precious it is when they find it. They don’t play games and there are no stupid misunderstandings, just life standing in their way.

Can they compromise? And what does that look like in a modern relationship between two driven people?

Assignment Vs deployment.

They’re always traveling in different directions. What relationship can survive that?

The moment you enable downloads and receive new books on your kindle … those are the moments to look forward to – especially when unexpectedly books form on of your favorite authors appear.

I received Battle Scars by Jane Harvey-Berrick to read / review and I fell in love with the cover first.
While I am still not sure if the title really fits the content I truly believe that the Cover could not have been better …. Hmmm yeah maybe if BT Urruela had been the one ON the Cover and handing me the book with a signature and a quote of Jane inside – #laughing

Now seriously … I fell in love with the writing of this author when I read Dangerous to Know & Love and that book will forever be my No. 1 – because lets be honest – you never forget your first love. But I think Battle Scars is my new No. 2 …

This book has so much to offer.
For one there are two seriously strong characters and while that should be a struggle for an author to bring those two together … it seems so effortlessly done here. Everything makes sense. There is not one person giving and the other taking. The Balance in the story was unbelievable .

I loved the PoV “Sarge” had – I think it was the first time ever that I heard a “Book-Marine” comment on the understanding of the life of a person related to a Soldier.

MJ was devoted to the thought of making a difference and trying this the best way she could think of made her developing relationship more real. Also her struggle to see if she really COULD make a difference or if she was doing more harm than good felt real.

Then there was this political roundtrip – I really had to take some deep breaths at some points – because a friend of mine was close to one event and could have easily ended up as collateral damage. In addition, that brings it home to every one of us ….There is NO place on earth where you are truly save anymore …

My heart stopped for a second when Sarge “slipped” – but I know that this was intentional so HELL yes it worked …

Also dear fellow lovers of this author you can give a wave to some old well known character that has his moment here … (not going to say who)

With all these strong emotions going on – let’s not forget one – the humor … I loved the banter between Sarge and MJ … amongst all the reality in this book and the romance there was still a little space for humor and witty dialogues …

Yes this book touches about all of the known subjects that go wrong in the world which makes it an emotional battlefield already – than it adds love, loss, humor , honor and two strong characters … So I leave you to guess how this will play out.
