Scandalous by LJ Shen
Publishing Date: September 29th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance
They call him The Mute for a reason.
Hard, cold and calculated, he rarely speaks.
When he does, it’s with disdain.
When he does, his words aren’t meant for me.
When he does, my stomach flips and my world tilts on its axis.
He is thirty-three.
I am eighteen.
He’s a single dad and my father’s business partner.
I’m just a kid to him and his enemy’s daughter.
He’s emotionally unavailable.
And I am…feeling. Feeling things I shouldn’t feel for him.
Trent Rexroth is going to break my heart. The writing isn’t just on the wall, it’s inked on my soul.
And yet, I can’t stay away.
A scandal is the last thing my family needs. But a scandal is what we’re going to give them.
And oh, what a beautiful chaos it will be.

Todays subject of my reading pleasure was ”Scandalous” the newest release in the Sinners of Saint Series by L.J. Shen. When I saw the name of this new book my mind directly conjured the plot of the previous books and I knew I had to get my hands on this to read it. Like the previous ones it can be read as a standalone but I am at a point in that series where I am not sure I would recommend doing it – you are really missing out on something if you do.
So here I am and imagine my surprise when I realized … I did not even read the plot before requesting a copy and if I have to be totally honest … when I read the plot now before starting to read the actual book I was shocked by my own actions. Well normally – if it had been any other author – I would not have chosen the book. As it is I fully trusted the author to know what she was doing.
So here I was “in for a penny” and after the first few pages I was sure – I was right to trust her!
This book is everything the other books in that series already were and again a little more. With every book the author added another layer to this group of men.
When there was one thing in this whole book where I felt the author should have done something different then it was the fact that I felt that for his title “the Mute” Trent was talking far too much. When the story started he should have been more “Mute” to make a point of his title.
Then I went deeper into the story and I felt like every book in this series is more raw than the last one. Ms. Shen seems to have the ability to find all the issues in society. Then she examines them and tests which of them work together and which don’t. Only to take those who should clearly stay away as far as possible from each other and force them to work with each other. The glue she uses for these ill-fitting pieces is pain.
Her stories hurt – I may have mentioned that before – but this one also had a new quality to it. While reading I felt both sides of the leading characters. And what I felt was their irritation about the pull they were having towards each other. I felt nauseated thinking of Trent falling for a teenager. Yet understanding the draw. The strength of Edie – that was only hiding a broken women.
Age is really more than a number. To say someone is “only” 18 or “just a teenager” is never sufficient … those words always used as a warning of some kind or as an excuse. But in reality a number like that does not say anything. Especially not when a childhood stopped at what I would guess 6 years when it comes to Edie. There are countries out there that consider 12 or 13 year olds as grown ups.
While I admit that I might admit that I had a strange feeling in the beginning too – considering the age difference. My mind was changed during the reading – I should have known better. Especially because I was always one to state that there a people having “old souls” that would act mature beyond their age.
I won’t go into details because of spoilers but trust me “age” difference is not the only thing that this author glued together – far from it.
What remains is me telling all fellow readers out there – if you like intense stories – read this series – read THIS book. – but fair warning … you will not find any fluffy cotton candy love in here. So if you can not handle dark and raw you need to stay away
