A tortured soul meets a damaged family…

A lonely man, a widowed woman, a carefree boy, and a broken girl… Can the four come together and help heal each other? Or will fear of the unknown and guilt of the past keep them apart?

Her whispered prayers break her…

At night, as she’s drifting off to sleep, I press my ear to the door and listen to her heart-wrenching pleas. Her words are agony to my healing heart, but I cherish the sound of them, for that’s the only time I ever hear my beautiful daughter speak. Since her father died two years ago, she’s grown quiet and withdrawn. Cat’s Valley was to be our new beginning, a place where my family and I can heal, but what we find there is so much more.

Scars mar his body. Pain has left him in pieces…

Four years ago, I lost the two things I cherished most in the world. They were ripped from my arms in the most painful and cruel way. Since then, I’ve kept to myself, preferring to stay away from the pitying looks and murmured rumors. Everything changed when she and her children barged into my life. It was an accident, and I don’t deserve them, but now that they’ve stepped into my life, I’m not sure I can let them go.

*This book is intended for mature audiences, ages 18+. It may be enjoyed as a standalone!

“I don’t deserve you. I don’t deserve whatever could happen between us.” I want to object, but he continues before I get a chance. “But there’s something I want more than my self-loathing for wanting something I shouldn’t.”

“What?” I rasp.

“A chance to know what it feels like to kiss you.”

About Alex:

Alex Grayson is the bestselling author of heart pounding, emotionally gripping contemporary romance including The Jaded Series, The Consumed Series, and two standalone novels. Her passion for books was reignited by a gift from her sister-in-law intended to distract Alex and help her pass the time while her husband was away for work. After spending several years as a devoted reader and blogger, Alex decided to write and independently publish her first novel in 2014 (an endeavor that took a little longer than expected). The rest, as they say, is history.

Originally a southern girl, Alex now lives in Ohio with her husband, two children, two cats and dog. She loves the color blue, homemade lasagna, casually browsing real estate, and interacting with her readers. Visit her website, www.alexgraysonbooks.com, or find her on social media!

At times, it hurt to read this book. I felt so much during this book at times I feel as if I felt too much.

If you look beyond the surface of this book you can really see the beauty of what the author has wanted to portray and what she has achieved.

Our Hero of the book Alexander suffered a tremendous loss. He has the scars to prove it. His life is stifling, he blames himself and he is grief stricken. Guilt is an emotion to take on easily but an emotion to let go of. Not so much. It takes a lot of work to let some emotions go and sometimes it is easier to live with the self-inflicted pain then to work through it all.

He has been a recluse since that day and has cut himself off from the world. Something things that are lost can be found. Alexander feels that his dream has shattered.

Once upon a time, I had plans to build a big house and fill it with laughter, but not any longer.  That ship has sailed, crashed, burned then sunk.

Alexander is somewhat of an anti-hero. He does things grudgingly. And beneath his orneriness and reluctance he is a good, kind man with demons. There were times where I loved Alexander but there were also times I loathed him. But I got him and I think that was the author’s aim.

Gwendolyn moved with her kids to Cat’s Valley as they also have suffered a tremendous loss and needed a fresh start. Daniel is talkative and hasn’t suffered too much but the one person that was hit the hardest was Kelsey. Since that day she has only spoken twice. Her whispered prayers at night broke me. Kelsey has selective mutism.

A chance encounter changes his path but not quite enough to make a first step. But now that their worlds have collided there is no stopping what is about to happen. Fate intervenes. Alexander rescues Gwen and her kids from a snowstorm but has no choice but to take them into his home. Being a hermit he doesn’t know if he can do it. Turns out it isn’t as bad as he expected it to be.

They always say that like recognizes Iike and here it is no different. They all have experienced an agony where Kelsey and Alexander have the most in common. It is as if they were meant to meet one another. They were meant to help one another through the suffering and the pain. To come out stronger.

When it came to Alexander and Kelsey? Be still my beating heart. It crushed me and made me happy at the same time.

The book is heartfelt, saddening, He is a tortured Hero. It’s a journey we are taken along on with such insight into the grief, the pain, the agony our characters experience. But we still see how that working through all of those emotions, hope, love, understanding and reaching a certain level of happiness.

Why not 5 stars?

First person point of view is not my thing. Everything that person does is listed which I found to tiring. Also, although this is a beautiful story and I enjoyed it very much I didn’t feel the connection between them. I need more conversational interaction between the two. I did feel the chemistry but it wasn’t quite enough for me.

This book won’t be for everyone because the dead spouse trope is very prominent. This book is about moving on but not forgetting those that we love and that there is always space in our hearts to love more and give more.

The cynic in me says that they just happened to have something similar happen to them as with the loss that Alexander experienced? Yeah not likely although fate can be a fickle thing. I also would have liked Gwen to have gotten angry with Alexander but no she was just so understanding.

On a personal note, currently I’m dealing with some personal things and this helped me in a way to let out the emotions/feelings I usually can’t. They have an instant connection and after those days spent together they don’t want to leave one another. Alexander was a bit of a bastard IMO, I get it as it was hard for him to let go.
