Reading “Steady as the Snow Falls” by Lindy Zart actually showed me again that we readers are just like “the moth and the flame” – Or as I like to call myself – I am a glutton for punishment.
I read “Unlit Star” so I knew that this author has the ability to write beautiful deep stories that can really emotionally drain you. So yes I knew what I was getting myself into and still I could not stop myself.
But I have to say that I had to stop at times during reading – and I actually started a second book while I read this one. I finished the second and started a third book which I also finished.
Because I could not read that book at the usual places I read, like when I am commuting or during breaks at work – or even in the presence of others. People around me have gotten used to the fact that I sometimes cry during reading and I usually do not mind that.
But this felt different and more personal for me. I was not willing to share those emotions with others at that time because I did not want to explain myself while experiencing them.
This author has the uncanny ability to place a finger right in the middle of something that hurts and I needed to investigate those feelings she evoked for myself.
It took me a while and I am still not sure I could explain them all.
Shame – is one of them – Shame because I could actually relate to stuff that Harrison said. (you will know the stuff when you read it)
Anger – towards humans in general – and a certain woman in specific
Hope – because you want to believe
Calm and Peace – because once you connect with Harrison and listen to what he has to say, your heart may get heavy in the process but your mind can relate. The whole setting of this book – with it’s snow and that house couldn’t have been anymore perfect for the story.
Sorrow – for all the time lost
Beth and Harrison are unique characters that deserve only the best – but life is what it is – and in some moments I would like to take back my insistence that contemporary should always be near to reality.
I felt the love – it hurt so much I wanted to hug both of them and never let go
Finally there is fear – the same fear I felt after reading “Unlit Star” – The voice that warned me to read another book by this author. Reminding me that I still did not review that book properly – because I could not do it. But as you see – that fear did not stop me from reading the next book.
And I am happy I read it – because all those feelings show me what reading is all about –
