| Here we are … at what is supposed to be the end to the Foundlings Series by Fiona Keane…. You are wondering I can see it why I choose to say “supposed to be” … well I have to be honest … the series is at an end but it feels like there could be something coming. Not that there are any loose ends but it feels like some questions of a rather personal nature are not explored. One reader might be totally fine by that but another (like myself) feels that there could be something more especially given the nature of the complete story. A different kind of epilogue might have done wonders in that area (at least for me)
My reviews are usually mostly about how I felt while I read a book and in this book something was on my mind constantly. Like the blurb suggests – our leads need to die so how would you feel if you needed to die (not in a paranormal vampire kind of way or in a like being dead in the end but simply die for everyone you used to know) ….. I think this book explores quite well how the leads feel about that and it was like watching them losing the rest of the little that they still had. On one hand they felt so well adjusted to their situation on the other hand everything spiraled out of control. The story gives the reader one whiplash after the other.
There was one thing bugging me though. <spoiler> Dying means that also their names needed to die but for me they stuck to their names to much, which did not work well for my personal taste. How should they ever get used to those if they never use them and call themselves by their old names? I would have felt better if they had used nicknames like “J” or “phia” or something …</spoiler>
So the series came to its end and how do I feel about that. I am not sure that I would have made it a trilogy because I feel the plot would have suited a duet just fine for several reasons that would give to many spoilers if I tried to explain them. Also the “ton” that was set in the first book changed dramatically in the second, the third book was following the second when it came to that. What do I think about that change in tone? Well I am not sure – both of the ways the story was brought to the reader were fine but I preferred the first one. And for a trilogy I think you should only use one so there is that.
I loved the first book to pieces and maybe that is another reason why I feel a duet would have been better because the field would be more even as the first two books kind of steal fire from the last book. Which leaves the third book with a grand finale that kind of stands in the shadows of what the other books had. Together with the fact that the end is kind of to open without at least an epilogue dealing with certain things I can not bring myself to give the book 5 stars no matter how much I loved the first book. Actually if I hadn’t loved that book so much my final rating might even drop deeper than 4 stars for the last book.
It’s a good thing that all books are out now so readers can read them all together now experiencing the whole story instead of reading them as a trilogy, maybe the experience is different when you read them all in one.
I loved the characters but still again I felt the leads we meet in book two & three are different from those that we met in the first book. And somehow I feel kind of protective about these leads from the first book (#laughing) … In total it is a great debut that should have maybe been published a little different but I would pick up a book from this author again at any time if the blurb appeals to me. Her writing is already good and I think given some more releases we can expect some really interesting books from here while her writing will gain that little tiny bit I was missing here.
So I really would like to recommend this new author to you to explore …
